چکیده

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph observations of the weak interstellar N I λ1160 doublet toward 17 high-density sightlines [N(Htot) ≥ 10 21 cm]. When combined with published data, our results reveal variations in the fractional N I abundance showing a systematic deficiency at large N(Htot). At the FUSE resolution (∼ 20 km s) the effects of unresolved saturation cannot be conclusively ruled out, although O I λ1356 shows little evidence for saturation. We investigated the possibility that the N I variability is due to the formation of N2 in our mostly dense regions. The 0-0 band of the c′4 Σu − X Σg transition of N2 at 958 Å should be easily detected in our FUSE data; for 10 of the denser sightlines N2 is not observed at a sensitivity level of a few times 10 cm. The observed N I variations are suggestive of an incomplete understanding of nitrogen chemistry. Subject headings: ISM: atoms — ISM: abundances — ISM: clouds — ultraviolet: ISM

The Abundance of Interstellar Nitrogen

Using the HST Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS), we have obtained high S/N echelle observations of the weak interstellar N I 1160,1161 absorption doublet toward the stars Cas, Ori, Ori, Ori, Sco and Sco. In combination with a previous GHRS measurement of N I toward Oph, these new observations yield a mean interstellar gas-phase nitrogen abundance (per 10 H atoms) of 10 N/H = 75 4 ( 1 ...

On the Variation of Deuterium and Oxygen Abundances in the Local Interstellar Medium

The first observations of deuterium and oxygen in the Local Interstellar Medium (LISM) obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) can be used to search for local abundance variations. While the very limited sample of these first data may be consistent with no variations, they do offer a hint of anti-correlated variations between D/H and O/H. If confirmed by more data (which...

The Deuterium-to-oxygen Ratio in the Interstellar Medium

Because the ionization balances for H I, O I, and D I are locked together by charge exchange, the deuterium-to-oxygen ratio, D/O, is an important tracer for the value of the D/H ratio and for potential spatial variations in the ratio. As the D I and O I column densities are of similar orders of magnitude for a given sight line, comparisons of the two values will generally be less subject to sys...

The Definitive Abundance of Interstellar Oxygen

Using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained high S/N echelle observations of the weak interstellar O I λ1356 absorption toward the stars γ Cas, Per, δ Ori, Ori, 15 Mon, τ CMa, and γ Ara. In combination with previous GHRS measurements in six other sightlines (ζ Per, ξ Per, λ Ori, ι Ori, κ Ori, and ζ Oph), these new observations yield...

Oxygen Gas Phase Abundance Revisited

We present new measurements of the interstellar gas-phase oxygen abundance along the sight lines towards 19 early-type galactic stars at an average distance of 2.6 kpc. We derive O I column densities from HST/STIS observations of the weak 1355 Å intersystem transition. We derive total hydrogen column densities [N(H I)+2N(H2)] using HST/STIS observations of Lyman-α and FUSE observations of molec...
